Happy Mother’s Day…. to ALL Single Parents (Yup, Dads Included)

Having been a single parent for a very long time, Mother’s Day… and Father’s Day take on a bit of a twist. When you’re doing double-duty, moms have to do things dads would normally handle…. there’s no choice.

I recall when my son needed his very first jock strap for baseball. There we were in Dick’s Sporting Goods having no idea where to start; and seeing that sweet little face looking up for guidance. How do you pick a size? What kind is best? Does he wear underwear with it? Does it go over the undies or under the undies… or no undies??!! I had no clue. Even asking a nearby gentleman didn’t help much. “Whatever he likes” wasn’t exactly the answer I was looking for.

Eventually we just picked one and headed home. Few minutes later my son comes down the stairs beaming at his accomplishment… jock strap worn over top of baggy plaid boxers. Why, oh why did I not take a picture of that??? Somehow it just didn’t seem right, but he was so proud, I let it go. And, you know what, it all worked out. He shared his new purchase with a few friends who just went through the same experience… they shared what they had done, and my son figured it out with the help of his friends.

Lesson here… do what you can, ask for help (even when that help is no help at all), go with the flow, then cut yourself and your kids some slack.
